The St. Joseph Bulldogs are headed back the Class 2A State
Golf Tournament after winning the 3-2A District Tournament Monday at the Links at Cadron Valley on Monday afternoon.
Led by senior Landon Enderlin, who earned medalist honors
with five-over-par 75, St. Joseph turned in a team score of 262, followed by
Bigelow, 269; and Conway Christian, 294.
Abundant Life had two golfers compete with a score of 109,
followed by Quitman’s pair with 148. Schools had to have three golfers to compete for team purposes.
The top two teams will move on to the Class 2A State
Tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Conway Country Club.
Coach Chris Kordsmeier was very pleased with the Bulldogs' performance.
“I’m real proud. I think the guys all stepped up today,” Kordsmeier
said. “You know, there’s playing golf and then there’s playing in a tournament.
You have to play with the pressure of your score and people watching. It’s just
a little more pressure. I was real proud of the guys and I think they did a
good job and it was a good win for us today.”
Heading into the tournament, St. Joseph had experienced golfer Enderlin leading the team. Enderlin won medalist honors as a freshman and
sophomore and finished runner-up last year.
“When you have a good anchor like that, that’s a good solid
guy to have your team led by,” Kordsmeier said.
Other St. Joe scores were Landon Bruich, 89; Briden Brorman,
98; and Nash Nichols, 100.
Having the state tournament here in Conway is an opportunity
for the Bulldogs to showcase their program. Kordsmeier said he felt good about their chance to repeat as state champs.
“It’s like their home course,” he said. “That will
help us a little bit. What’s good is that three of the guys on our team play there
with their parents. I think we have as good a chance as anybody to win.”
Kordsmeier also pointed out that Bigelow has a good chance
of winning, too.
“It’s golf; anything can happen,” he said.
Both boys and girls golf teams for St. Joseph will competing in the state tournament.
The girls are returning for the first time since 2011.
“We’ve done pretty well at our school with our golf
programs," Kordsmeier said. "And the boys and the girls compete against each other and I think
that makes them play better.”
Conway Christian’s Will Jackson [84] Trey Starkey [103]
Tyler Gum [107] and Abundant Life’s Patrick Hurst [101] qualified as
individuals for the state tournament.
